Overview of Therapies in Addiction Treatment

Therapeutic services are an important component of substance use disorder treatment and support the development of insight, stability, and long-term recovery skills. While withdrawal management and detoxification services focus on safely supporting the physical effects of substance use, therapy helps clients identify underlying factors, strengthen coping strategies, address emotional and behavioral patterns, and work toward individualized treatment goals. Most treatment programs utilize a combination of evidence-based and clinically appropriate therapeutic interventions tailored to each client’s assessed needs, recovery stage, and overall plan of care.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy provides clients with a private, clinically supportive setting to address personal challenges, substance use patterns, co-occurring concerns, trauma history, and barriers to sustained recovery. These one-on-one sessions are facilitated by a licensed or appropriately credentialed clinical professional and allow for individualized assessment, treatment planning, skill development, and goal setting. Through a person-centered and recovery-oriented approach, clients are supported in developing insight, strengthening coping strategies, improving emotional regulation, and working toward meaningful progress in their overall treatment and recovery goals.

Group Therapy

Group therapy provides a structured, supportive setting where clients can engage with peers who are also working toward recovery from substance use disorder. Facilitated by qualified program staff, group sessions encourage clients to share experiences, practice healthy communication, strengthen relapse-prevention skills, and develop insight into patterns that may impact recovery. Through peer support, education, and guided discussion, clients are able to reduce isolation, build accountability, and develop practical coping strategies that support ongoing wellness and long-term recovery.
